«Eigänä» – from the vineyard to the glass
«Eigänä» – that’s what we in Valais call our house wine. Everything is done in-house: from planting the vines to designing the label. Below Zeneggen, at 800–900 metres, three varieties grow: Pinot Noir, Johannisberg (Silvaner) and Muscat. Thanks to the mild climate and the sheltered location in the Riedboden, wines with character emerge – fruity and full-bodied. In late autumn, the grapes are harvested, pressed in the cellar, and bottled in spring. But beware: supplies don’t last the whole season.
Our vineyard is situated on a south-east-facing slope at an average altitude of 825 m above sea level (ranging from 800 to 850 m). The slope has an average gradient of 30–50%, typical of the steeply terraced Valais highlands. The Riedboden soil is geologically unique: it is home to the only vineyard in Valais that grows on volcanic rock. Our wines thrive exclusively on this rock – serpentinite.
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is a red grape variety grown in Valais, internationally renowned for its elegance and finesse. The wines are characterised by subtle aromas of red fruits such as cherries and strawberries, accompanied by a delicate spice and a velvety texture. They have a lively acidity and can develop additional complexity with age.
Johannisberg
Silvaner
Johannisberg, also known as Sylvaner, is a white grape variety native to Valais, producing characteristic wines with fresh and fruity aromas. These wines often display notes of green apples, citrus fruits, and blossoms, paired with a lively acidity and a light, refreshing structure. Johannisberg is an excellent choice as an aperitif or to accompany light dishes and salads.
Muscat
Muscat
Muscat is an aromatic grape variety grown in Valais, producing wines with an intense fragrance of nutmeg and flowers. These wines are often highly aromatic and fruity, with notes of peaches, orange blossoms, and spices. On the palate, they present a lively acidity and a pleasant freshness. Muscat is well-suited as an aperitif or to accompany exotic dishes and desserts.
The Riedboden – worth a visit
Our vineyard lies in the Riedboden, below Zeneggen, on a steep south-easterly facing slope. It can be reached on foot – a short detour via a public footpath. The location on unique volcanic serpentinite rock is geologically remarkable: no other vineyard in Valais grows on this type of bedrock.
In autumn, when the harvest takes place, the Riedboden is particularly beautiful: golden leaves, deep blue grapes, and the view stretching far down into the Rhône valley. If you would like to be there – ask at the reception about the harvest date. Sometimes it works out.
Getting to the Riedboden
From Visp station (Stundenhaus an der Vispa) via the Driest up to Zeneggen – the path passes through the Riedboden. More exposed, but with spectacular views.
Along the Zen Stadeln agricultural road – less exposed, ideal for a peaceful walk.
In 2024, the Musée du Vin organised a guided walk to the Riedboden. Thomas Mumenthaler, author of «Stein und Wein», presented the unique geology of the serpentinite. Christoph Kenzelmann then explained the grape varieties, climate and terroir – followed by a joint tasting. A collaboration we are proud of.
The Labels
The labels on our wines bear the signature of the Japanese-Swiss artist Teruko Yokoi from Bern. Her watercolours depict Valaisian landscapes across the seasons of harvest – light, expressive, with an unmistakeable Japanese brushwork style. Each bottle carries a small original.
Teruko was a regular guest at Hotel Alpenblick for many years. Every year, Christoph would bring her a case of wine at her studio in Bern – and over a cup of Japanese tea, they would talk about the world, the year gone by, and what endures.
Teruko Yokoi has sadly passed away. Her labels remain.
